During a private meeting with major Republican Party donors at his club in Florida, President Donald Trump admitted that ending Russia’s war against Ukraine has become a much more difficult task for him than expected. The Wall Street Journal reports this with reference to those present at the event.
“It keeps me up at night,” Trump was quoted as saying. According to them, he described the talks with Vladimir Putin as “extremely difficult” because he wants “everything” – meaning the territory of Ukraine.
The former president also referred to the conflict between Israel and Palestine, calling it “hopeless” because the parties “have been at war for a thousand years”. Such statements sound in contrast to Trump’s election promises, who last year promised to end the war in Ukraine “in one day” after returning to the White House.
More than 100 days into his second term, the WSJ reports that neither the war in Ukraine nor the Middle East crisis are any closer to being resolved. The newspaper’s sources say: “Trump has increasingly complained to advisers that Putin is not showing any willingness to make peace and that both sides refuse to compromise.
US officials admit that Moscow is the main obstacle to a ceasefire. Russia has not supported the 30-day truce proposed by Kyiv and is putting forward new demands.
The White House believes that even the launch of a direct dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow could be presented by Trump as a “success”, and the US would instead focus on other global challenges.
