US President Donald Trump said he believes in Vladimir Putin’s desire to end the war against Ukraine. He told reporters about this on Monday after a telephone conversation with the Russian leader, CNN reports, TimeUkraineIsrael reports.
“Yes,” Trump replied briefly when asked whether he believed Putin was interested in peace and trusted him.
What we know about the conversation
According to Trump, “some progress” was made during the call, although he did not disclose details. The President noted that the situation on the frontline is terrible:
“5,000 young people die every week. I hope we have been able to do something. We have also spoken to the heads of most European countries and are trying to put an end to this. It’s a pity that it all started in the first place.”
Sanctions? Not now
Trump added that he would not tighten sanctions against Russia, considering it inappropriate at a time when there is a “chance” of a diplomatic breakthrough:
“I think there is a chance to do something. And if you push too hard, you can make things much worse. But there may come a time when this will change.”
Trump’s statement came amid efforts by Washington and the EU to find a peaceful settlement. At the same time, Ukraine has repeatedly stressed that any negotiations are possible only if Russian troops are fully withdrawn and its territorial integrity is restored.
