US President Donald Trump is calling for a permanent ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, not a temporary truce as announced by Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. This was stated by White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt during a briefing on 28 April.
“The president has made it clear that he wants a permanent ceasefire – to stop the killing and stop the bloodshed,” Levitt said, commenting on Moscow’s latest initiatives.
According to her, Volodymyr Zelenskyy is “making significant efforts to achieve peace”, while Donald Trump is seeking to become a “peacemaker president”, as he was during his first term.
Caroline Levitt emphasised that Trump remains optimistic about the possibility of a peace deal, but is taking a realistic approach to the situation. “Both leaders need to sit down at the negotiating table and find a way out of the situation,” she added.
This statement by the White House came against the backdrop of Putin’s new proposal for a temporary truce, which was criticised in the United States.
