US President Donald Trump has accused CBS and 60 Minutes of defamation, political bias and “illegal behaviour”. The reason was the Sunday broadcast of stories about Ukraine and Greenland, which mentioned Trump’s name in a critical context. This was reported bythe Associated Press.
“60 Minutes is no longer a news show. It is political agents masquerading as journalism. They should pay a heavy price for going after me,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Conflict with the media
Trump called on the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to impose maximum fines on CBS. He also announced a $20 billion lawsuit filed against 60 Minutes over an interview with Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, which Trump said was manipulatively edited.
CBS denies the allegations, but, according to media reports, negotiations are underway on a possible settlement.
Ukraine, Greenland and Zelenskyy
At the same time, 60 Minutes continues to cover the Trump administration’s activities despite the court case. Journalist Scott Pelley visited Ukraine and interviewed Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who invited Trump to visit the country and see the consequences of Russian aggression.
Another story that provoked Trump’s outrage concerned Greenland – journalist John Wertheim was filming a report on the local perception of Trump’s idea to buy the island.
