Donald Trump, who is currently serving as US president for the second time, has denied speculation that he plans to run for a third term, which has long been discussed among his supporters. This was reported by the BBC.
In a commentary on NBC’s Meet the Press programme, Trump said:
“I have always believed that being president for two terms is the right thing to do. It is enough.”
These statements were made amid a wave of speculation: the Trump Organization launched merchandise with the inscription “Trump 2028”, which fuelled rumours of a possible attempt to circumvent the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, which explicitly prohibits the election of one person as president more than twice.
What does the law say?
The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution:
“No person may be elected president more than twice.”
To repeal or amend an amendment, it is necessary to
▪️ ⅔ of the votes in both houses of Congress
▪️ Ratification by ¾ of the states
However, some Trump supporters believe that there are legal loopholes that have not yet been tested in court. Trump himself responded diplomatically:
“Many people have said different things. But this is not what I want.”
Nevertheless, he has acknowledged that many people are asking him to stay on and has already named several potential successors, including Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“Four years is enough time to do something really impressive,” Trump concluded.
