US President Donald Trump has said that military intervention against Iran is “quite possible” if a new nuclear deal is not reached soon. This was reported by AFP.
“If we have to use force, we will,” Trump said, adding that Israel would play a key role in any potential conflict. His words came on the eve of the planned talks in the Sultanate of Oman between representatives of the United States and Iran.
Trump recalled that in March he had sent a letter to Iran with a proposal for new negotiations that would replace the previous nuclear deal, which Washington abandoned in 2018. However, he also threatened to bomb Iran if diplomacy failed.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the military option “inevitable” if the negotiations drag on. Iran, for its part, said it was ready for dialogue, but not under pressure or threats.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon has deployed up to six B-2 strategic bombers to a military base on Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean. This move, according to US Secretary of Defence Pete Hagel, is a “powerful signal” to both Iran and the world. The bombers are capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads.
