US President Donald Trump fired National Security Adviser Mike Volz on Thursday, the first major reshuffle of his team since returning to the White House in January. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will temporarily act as Volz’s replacement, Trump said on Truth Social. This was reported by Reuters.
Rubio’s appointment is unique – for the first time since Henry Kissinger, one person holds two key positions: foreign minister and national security adviser.
Trump also announced that he would nominate Volz for the post of US permanent representative to the UN. At the same time, Reuters sources claim that the decision to resign was made earlier amid a scandal: in March, Volz accidentally added a journalist to a secret Signal chat room discussing military plans for Yemen.
Along with Volz, his deputy, Alex Wong, an expert on Asia and North Korea who worked in the first Trump administration, is leaving the administration.
