Donald Trump has once again found himself at the centre of a political storm after hinting that a third presidential term is not such an absurd idea for him. In an interview with NBC News, he said: “I like to work… There are ways to do it,” The Guardian reports.
Although the US Constitution prohibits a third term, Trump’s staunch ally, US Attorney General Pam Bondi, questioned the realism of such intentions:
“I think he will finish after this mandate. That would be very difficult under the Constitution,” she said on Fox News.
The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, adopted in 1951 after Franklin Roosevelt’s four terms, explicitly prohibits a single president from serving more than two terms. And attempts to circumvent this through workarounds, such as Trump’s election as vice president, are also blocked by the 12th Amendment.
Nevertheless, Trump’s words sparked a new wave of discussions about his political ambitions and the future of the United States.
