Political revival and triumph
Donald Trump, who was elected president of the United States for the second time, was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year 2024, calling him “the most powerful man in the world”. This decision was based not only on his historic return to power, but also on the significant changes he has brought to American politics.
Trump was previously named Person of the Year in 2016, when he first became president. The magazine called his triumphant return in 2024 “unprecedented in US history”. After the unsuccessful completion of his first term due to scandals and tensions in the political environment, Trump managed to win the election, changing the electoral map in favour of the Republican Party, Time Ukraine Israel reports, citing Vesty.
Politics and populism
In its commentary, Time notes that Trump has become the embodiment of the populist sentiment that has swept the United States. “He is both a representative of current trends and the one who will benefit from them,” the article says. His rhetoric on the economy, immigration and social issues has resonated with various groups, from suburbanites to young voters and entrepreneurs.
In an interview with the magazine, the 78-year-old Trump stressed his intention to continue expanding the Abraham Accords concluded in his first term and his cautious approach to a peaceful settlement between Israel and Palestine.
The Iranian threat and a policy without trust
Trump ruled out an imminent war with Iran, but left open the possibility of a conflict. “Anything can happen,” he said, discussing the growing Iranian threat due to the development of its nuclear programme. Although Trump’s first term was marked by avoiding new wars, he acknowledged that he was ready to take drastic steps if the situation required it.
It is noteworthy that in a conversation with journalists, Trump said that he did not trust anyone, even key allies, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“72 Days of Fury”
Trump himself calls his victory the culmination of 72 days of rage. In his view, the main drivers of change were popular dissatisfaction with the economy and growing distrust of institutions. “We have touched the very nerve of the country,” he said.
Trump’s populist rhetoric and willingness to undertake fundamental reforms have made him a symbol of change for those who believe the system needs a reset. “He understands the cultural zeitgeist,” his supporters say.
Competitors for the title of Person of the Year
Other contenders for the title of Person of the Year included Benjamin Netanyahu, Elon Musk, Kamala Harris and others. In particular, Netanyahu was recognised as one of the most influential but controversial leaders.
Donald Trump went down in history as a leader who not only embodied populist ideas but also managed to use them to triumphantly return to power. His 72 Days of Rage strategy changed the political landscape of the United States, making him one of the most prominent politicians of our time.
