US President Donald Trump has ordered the transfer of Greenland to the United States Northern Command. This was announced by Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell.

According to an official statement, the relevant changes have been made to the Unified Command Plan. Greenland, which was previously under the responsibility of the US European Command, will now fall under the jurisdiction of the Northern Command.

As explained by the US Department of Defence, the purpose of this step is to strengthen the ability of the Joint Forces to more effectively defend US territory, as well as to ensure more reliable defence of the Western Hemisphere. In addition, this decision should help deepen cooperation with Arctic allies and partners.

The Pentagon notes that the initiative is in line with the Interim National Defence Strategic Guidance and is aimed at strengthening the US presence in the Arctic region.
