President-elect Donald Trump is expected to appoint a special Ukrainian representative for peace talks in the near future to lead efforts to stabilise the situation between Ukraine and Russia. This is reported by TimeUkraineIsrael with reference to Fox News.
According to the sources, a high-ranking person with great authority and experience will be appointed to the position of special representative, who will be called upon to find optimal solutions for a peaceful settlement. It is expected that this position will remain unpaid, as was the case with Kurt Volker, who worked on a volunteer basis from 2017 to 2019 in the Ukraine negotiations.
Building a team: relying on reliable advisers
Trump is actively forming his cabinet and recruiting a team of advisers on key national security and international relations issues. In particular, Congressman Michael Walz was elected National Security Advisor, and Senator Marco Rubio, according to Fox News, will head the State Department. Steven Witkoff has also been appointed Special Representative for the Middle East.
In his programme, Trump repeatedly emphasised his readiness to reach a peace agreement, including negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, specific details about the strategy and steps to implement this plan have not yet been announced.
Peace agreement: compromises and challenges
According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump’s team is considering controversial proposals, including freezing the front line by creating an 800-mile demilitarised zone. The proposals also include a condition that Russia retains control over approximately 20% of the territory of Ukraine that it has seized since 2014. Another proposal is that Ukraine not seek NATO membership for 20 years.
These proposals have already caused controversy among Trump’s advisers, as critics point out that they could provide Russia with significant strategic advantages and confirm its control over the occupied territories.
