US President Donald Trump has announced his intention to impose duties on products from the European Union, accusing the EU of unfair trade relations. He made the announcement on Friday, 31 January, answering questions from journalists at the White House.

“Will I impose tariffs on the EU? Do you want an honest answer or a political answer? Absolutely. The EU has treated us terribly,” Trump said.

The American president expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that European countries, in his words, hardly buy American goods.

“They don’t take our cars. They don’t take our agricultural products. In fact, they take almost nothing. We have a huge deficit with the EU. So we’re going to do something very significant with the EU,” Trump said.

He explained that the introduction of the duties should help the US to remedy the situation with its trade deficit.

Trump’s statement is expected to cause tensions between Washington and Brussels, as well as to trigger retaliatory measures from the EU.
