US President Donald Trump has announced his readiness to impose new sanctions against the Russian Federation if the Kremlin does not end the war in Ukraine. He said this in an interview with Fox News on Friday, 16 May.
“I will do it if I have to. But I would prefer not to,” Trump said when asked about the possibility of toughening sanctions.
The US leader noted that new economic measures by the US would be “devastating” for Russia, as, according to him, the economic situation in the country is already difficult and oil prices remain low. He stressed that the introduction of new restrictions is possible if a peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv is not reached.
“It’s time to carve the turkey. Let’s see what happens,” the US president added, hinting at the need for decisive action.
Trump also expressed doubts that an agreement to end the war could be concluded without his involvement, stressing the deep mutual hatred between the parties to the conflict.
Recently, after a round of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, a coordination phone call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk with Donald Trump took place. This once again underscored the key role of the United States in resolving the war in Europe.
