The transition team of US President-elect Donald Trump has drafted a series of decrees aimed at withdrawing the country from the Paris Climate Agreement and reducing the size of some national monuments, which will allow for the expansion of mining and drilling. Reuters writes about this with reference to The New York Times.
The article notes that Trump also plans to end the moratorium on liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to Asian and European markets, as well as to revoke a permit that allows California and other states to impose stricter environmental standards.
Caroline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s transition team, said that winning the election gives him a “mandate to deliver on his campaign promises” and the newly elected president is ready to fulfil his statements. During the election campaign, Trump repeatedly advocated the relaxation of environmental regulations to stimulate the economy.
Among other initiatives, the Trump team is considering moving the headquarters of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) out of Washington. This move is likely aimed at further decentralising the agency and possibly reducing its influence.
