In his address on the Truth Social platform, US President Donald Trump said that he had instructed the government to open and modernise the famous Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay to hold America’s most dangerous criminals. This was reported by AFP.

“For decades, America has been plagued by vicious, violent repeat offenders – scum of the earth who bring nothing but pain and destruction,” Trump said.

According to him, the FBI, the Department of Justice, the Bureau of Prisons and the US Department of Homeland Security have already received the order. Alcatraz is to be “significantly expanded and rebuilt” to serve as a supermaximum security prison.

“We will bring back Alcatraz as a symbol of law, order and justice,” the President stressed.

The Alcatraz prison, located on an island 2 km off the coast, was closed in 1963 due to the high cost of running it. It used to house legendary criminals such as Al Capone and is now a popular tourist attraction.

Fighting crime has become a key element of Trump’s second term as president, who has repeatedly promised to act “hard, fast and decisively”.
