US President-elect Donald Trump has decided not to invite pro-Ukrainian politicians Nikki Haley and Mike Pompeo to his administration, despite their previous productive cooperation. This is reported by TimeUkraineIsrael with reference to Expres.
On his Truth page, Trump stated that he appreciated the work of these officials, but did not intend to involve them in the formation of a new government. Although the politician emphasised his respect for their contribution, he made it clear that Haley and Pompeo’s pro-Ukrainian stance would not be a priority for his team.
Pompeo and Haley: Famous allies of Ukraine
Mike Pompeo, who served as US Secretary of State and CIA Director during Trump’s first term, actively advocated support for Ukraine in the war with Russia on the eve of the election. In his column in The Wall Street Journal, Pompeo stressed the importance of increasing military aid to Kyiv, real sanctions against Russia, and the need for a large-scale “lend-lease” programme for Ukraine, worth up to $500 billion. He also supported the restoration of NATO’s role and the possibility of Ukraine’s integration into the Alliance.
For her part, Nikki Haley, who was running for the Republican nomination in the election, also repeatedly called for support for Ukraine. She stressed the importance of countering Putin and warned that trust in the Russian president was unacceptable. Haley advocated for continued military assistance to Ukraine, stressing that it is key to ensuring the security of the United States and its allies.
Possible impact on future US policy on the war in Ukraine
According to The Telegraph, the US position on the war in Ukraine will depend on the choice of Trump’s cabinet members. The newspaper also notes that the political line of Pompeo and Haley, who were prominent pro-Ukrainian figures, could have a significant impact on strengthening support for Kyiv. However, as Trump rejects their participation in the new government, this support may be reconsidered.
As a reminder, Mike Pompeo criticised the Biden administration for not providing enough assistance to Ukraine, stressing the importance of the US playing an active role in countering Russia’s aggression. His tough stance left no room for agreements favourable to Moscow, which could create some disagreements in the new Trump administration.
Donald Trump’s decision not to involve pro-Ukrainian politicians such as Haley and Pompeo signals a possible change of course in US policy towards the war in Ukraine, focusing on other priorities in his administration’s foreign policy.
