This was stated by Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, TRT Haber reports.
“Efforts to increase storage capacity are ongoing in line with the goal of increasing the security of energy supply… We aim to reach storage capacity of approximately 12 bcm by 2028,” the Minister said.
Where is gas stored in Turkey now?
- Kuzey Marmara is the country’s largest underground storage facility, which stores 4.6 bcm of gas.
- Tuz Gölü is a salt cave storage facility with a capacity of 1.2 billion cubic metres.
In total, Turkey can currently store 5.8 bcm of natural gas.
Why is Turkey increasing its gas reserves?
Turkey is actively strengthening its energy independence by expanding its own gas reserves. This will allow the country to:
- To ensure the stability of energy supply in the face of geopolitical instability.
- Less dependence on external gas suppliers.
- Strengthen Turkey’s position as an energy hub between Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Experts note that doubling storage facilities will allow Turkey to respond more effectively to energy crises and increase its influence in the gas market.
