Turkish diplomat meets with new Syrian leader in Damascus

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Syria’s new leader Ahmed al-Shareh in Damascus on Sunday. This was reported by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to AFP and Reuters.

Details of the meeting remain unknown

Turkish diplomacy did not specify the venue for the talks between Hakan Fidan and Ahmed al-Shareh.

The day before, on Friday, Fidan announced his intention to visit the Syrian capital to meet with the new administration.

The changing political landscape in Syria

On 12 December, the head of Turkish intelligence, Ibrahim Kalın, had already visited Damascus after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. He was recorded leaving the Grand Umayyad Mosque accompanied by security guards, which was confirmed by footage broadcast by the private Turkish TV channel NTV.

Turkey’s position in the Syrian conflict

Since the beginning of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Turkey has been a key ally of the opposition against the Assad regime. Turkey has also hosted millions of Syrian refugees and supported Syrian rebel groups.

This meeting marks a new chapter in relations between Ankara and Damascus, which could affect the further development of the conflict and regional stability.
