European Union leaders will hold an urgent video conference on Wednesday morning to hear from French President Emmanuel Macron about his recent meeting with Donald Trump in Washington, Politico reports.
This was announced by the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, in his post on the social network X on Tuesday:
“In preparation for the Special European Council on 6 March, I am organising a videoconference of European Council members tomorrow morning to hear President Macron’s report on his recent visit to Washington.”
France tries to save support for Ukraine
The urgent discussion will take place on the eve of an extraordinary summit of EU leaders, which Costa has called to discuss the security of Ukraine and Europe.
Macron met with Donald Trump on Monday in a bid to secure security guarantees for Ukraine. This comes amid controversial statements by Trump, who last week questioned US involvement in the conflict and called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “dictator without elections”.
What does video communication before the summit mean?
European leaders are seeking to assess the situation after Macron’s talks in Washington and develop a unified position ahead of key decisions on military aid to Ukraine.
During the summit on 6 March, the EU countries are expected to discuss not only support for Kyiv, but also a common security strategy amid potential changes in US policy.
