Washington has officially approved the sale of 20 F-16 multi-role fighter jets to the Philippines for a total of $5.58 billion, The Economic Times reports . The decision comes amid heightened tensions in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly over the conflict in the South China Sea.

According to the US State Department, this agreement is aimed at strengthening the security of a strategic partner, as Manila is engaged in a territorial dispute with Beijing.

China shows strength around Taiwan

On the same day , China launched large-scale military exercises near Taiwan, involving land, air and sea forces. The manoeuvres simulate a blockade of the island, which Beijing considers its territory.

Against this backdrop, US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth stressed during his recent visit to the Philippines that Washington and Manila must remain united in the face of the Chinese threat.

“The United States is committed to maintaining deterrence in the region, particularly in the Taiwan Strait,” the Pentagon chief said.

Philippines prepares for possible escalation

In turn, Philippine Army Chief General Romeo Brawner warned that the country would inevitably be drawn into a possible conflict if China invaded Taiwan.

“If Taiwan is attacked, we will be involved. We should be preparing our response now,” Brauner told the military on the island of Luzon.

The Philippines and the United States, which have a mutual defence pact, plan to launch a major joint military exercise on 21 April. According to Browner, their key mission will be to evacuate more than 250,000 Filipinos living in Taiwan.
