General Chris Cavoli, the Commander-in-Chief of the US Armed Forces in Europe, has compiled a list of US weapons systems that could significantly strengthen the Ukrainian army in the fight against Russian aggression. Among them are air-to-ground missiles and NATO’s secure communications network, which has not yet been transferred to Ukraine. According to CNN, these systems are part of a secret report submitted to the US Congress earlier last month.
Key weapon systems
General Cavoli’s list includes several modern systems. In particular, the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile is an air-launched cruise missile that allows for precision strikes on strategically important targets. We are also talking about the Link 16 communication system, a data exchange network used by the US and NATO armies. It ensures effective coordination between combat units and air and missile defence systems.
According to sources familiar with the report, these systems could significantly improve Ukraine’s capabilities on the battlefield. However, US officials have repeatedly expressed concern about the possibility of US technology falling into Russian hands. In particular, they are concerned about the Link 16 system.
Calls for weapons
Ukraine continues to lobby hard for more advanced weapons systems, including long-range missiles. Recently, during a meeting with President Joe Biden at the White House, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy handed over a list of targets in Russia that Ukraine plans to hit with ATACMS missiles. Although Biden has not yet given final approval for the transfer of these systems, discussions are ongoing.
The Biden administration is doing everything possible to ensure that Ukraine receives the necessary weapons to wage war. The US hopes that by the end of 2025, all conditions will be created to strengthen Ukraine’s position. However, the situation remains uncertain due to the upcoming US presidential election.
Forecast for 2025
Given Russia’s combat losses, which exceed hundreds of thousands of soldiers, American military experts believe that President Vladimir Putin will be forced to resort to another mobilisation. The economic situation in Russia is also beginning to show signs of strain, and experts predict that by the end of next year, its economic stability could be seriously shaken.
