The administration of President Donald Trump is redirecting key components of anti-drone systems that were to be delivered to Ukraine to US forces in the Middle East. The Wall Street Journal reports this, citing sources in the US defence department.

We are talking aboutproximity detonators, high-tech devices that activate surface-to-air missiles near the target, ensuring accurate destruction of enemy drones. It is these components that Ukraine has effectively used to repel attacks by Russian UAVs.

Last week, however, the Pentagon secretly informed Congress that new batches of detonators would not go to Kyiv, but to US Air Force units in the Middle East. This decision was made by Defence Secretary Pete Hagel in a memo.

The reason for this is the growing tension with Iran and the possible resumption of fighting with the Yemeni Houthis. In the context of the global shortage of critical defence goods, the US is forced to reallocate resources, which negatively affects Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against air attacks.

This is not the first time that US military logistics have changed due to geopolitical competition, experts say.
