The administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing to cancel temporary protection for about 240,000 Ukrainians who fled the war. This decision may expose them to deportation, Reuters reports, citing government sources. This was reported by Reuters.

A sharp reversal of policy towards Ukrainians

Trump’s approach is a dramatic change from the policy pursued by the Joe Biden administration. The US used to provide humanitarian asylum to Ukrainians, but now the situation is changing dramatically.

According to sources, the decision was made before the recent deterioration in relations between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, it is part of a broader strategy in Washington – the Trump administration is seeking to review the status of 1.8 million migrants who were granted temporary asylum under Biden.

Mass deportation is the new course of the White House

Not only Ukrainians are the first to be threatened with expulsion. Sources say that the Trump administration may cancel the temporary protection status of 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans as early as this month.

Earlier, Trump signed an executive order instructing the Department of Homeland Security to end all temporary humanitarian programmes for refugees.

Official Washington is silent

Representatives of the White House and the Ukrainian embassy in the United States have not yet commented on the situation. The US Department of Homeland Security said it had “no announcements at this time”.
