In his first statement in office, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed that ending the war between Russia and Ukraine would require compromises on both sides. At the same time, he made it clear that Russia is the aggressor in this conflict. This was reported by CNN.

Compromises for peace

Rubio noted that peace is impossible without concessions:

“Parties that cannot achieve their maximum goals should be prepared to compromise.”

He stressed that the US would not dictate the terms of the negotiations, leaving the final decision to Ukraine and Russia.

“These issues should be resolved diplomatically, not publicly.”

The Trump administration’s priority

Ending the war in Ukraine will be one of the main tasks of Donald Trump’s administration, Rubio said:

“The process will start almost immediately. Some preparatory steps are already underway.”

However, the Secretary of State acknowledged that this will be a difficult path, as the conflict remains intense and bloody.

Russia as an aggressor

Rubio has repeatedly stressed that Russia is the party that started the conflict:

“Russia is the aggressor in this conflict, but the war must end.”

The key role of diplomacy

He stressed the importance of a diplomatic approach to ending the war, noting that the United States would act as a mediator and support peace efforts:

“We want the war to end. President Trump wants to be a leader who will bring peace and stop conflicts.”

Marco Rubio, a senator from Florida, was unanimously confirmed by the US Senate as Secretary of State. His statements indicate an active role of the US in trying to end the war in Ukraine through diplomatic mechanisms.
