US strikes Houthis in Yemen: a new round of conflict in the region

On Friday, the US military announced airstrikes against 15 targets linked to Houthi rebels in Yemen, according to CNN. This decision was a response to numerous attacks by Houthis on civilian ships bound for Israel and was justified by the need to “protect freedom of navigation” in the Red Sea.

The Houthis, who receive support from Iran, claimed that four cities in Yemen were hit by the strikes. In particular, the strikes were concentrated on the airport in Hodeidah and the Qatib district. The Houthi TV channel Al-Masirah reported seven attacks on these facilities.

The British Ministry of Defence denied that the UK was involved in these strikes, and the Israeli military said it had no information about the operations.

The footage released shows smoke rising in the sky over the northern district of Hodeida, a Houthi-controlled port city. The conflict between Iranian-backed groups such as the Houthis, Hezbollah and Hamas continues to escalate following recent Hamas attacks on Israel and the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The Houthis claim that their actions in the Red Sea are a form of solidarity with the Palestinian people, emphasising the link between the conflicts in the region. The situation remains tense, and the international community is monitoring developments that could have serious security implications for the entire region.
