Japan is a key US partner in deterring China’s military ambitions, US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth, who is on a visit to Tokyo, said. According to him, Washington is launching a reform of the US military command in Japan to increase combat effectiveness in the region, Politco reports .

“We share the warrior ethos that defines our armed forces. Japan is an indispensable partner in deterring communist Chinese aggression,” Hegseth said during talks with Japanese Defence Minister Gen Natsukani.

Joint missile production and military modernisation

The parties agreed to jointly develop and produce modern long-range air-to-air missiles MRAAM. They are also discussing the production of SM-6 anti-aircraft missiles to strengthen the combat capabilities of the allies.

In addition, the United States and Japan will accelerate the process of repair and maintenance of US warships and aircraft on Japanese territory.

The US is strengthening its defence in the region

Hegseth noted that in July, Washington decided to reorganise the command system of US and Japanese troops. There are 50,000 US troops deployed in the country, and their command will be modernised to respond quickly to potential threats.

Amid tensions between the US and China, Washington is seeking to restore the balance of power in the region. Although both countries are in favour of peace, “we have to be prepared,” the Pentagon chief stressed.
