USAID sends employees on furlough around the world

Almost all employees of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) around the world will be sent on administrative leave. This is reported on the official website of the agency.

“On Friday, 7 February, at 11:59 p.m. ET, all USAID salaried personnel will be furloughed worldwide, with the exception of designated mission-critical personnel, key management, and designated programmes,” the statement said.

Those employees who will continue to work will be notified by Thursday, 6 February.

A plan has been developed for USAID employees outside the United States to return to the United States within 30 days. During this period, PSC and ISC contracts that are not on the core list will also be terminated.

Administrative leave does not provide for the retention of salary and benefits.

According to a report by the Congressional Research Service, USAID has more than 10,000 employees, of whom about two-thirds work abroad. About 1,400 people work at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., and USAID has more than 60 offices in various countries and regions.
