The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been ordered to suspend all its projects and expenditures in Ukraine. This follows an order from the US State Department to suspend foreign aid programmes for 90 days to conduct an audit, Suspilne reports, citing a source in the USAID office in Kyiv.
USAID in Ukraine is implementing a wide range of projects, including rebuilding schools, providing healthcare services, and repairing critical energy infrastructure.
Reaction and consequences
Ukrainian organisations working with USAID funds are already receiving notices to cease activities funded by the US side.
The USAID press service did not respond to journalists’ inquiries, referring them to the US State Department.
The State Department’s decision
The order to suspend foreign aid programmes was signed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The document, which was obtained by POLITICO, provides for the suspension of almost all existing programmes, including military assistance to Ukraine.
The decision takes effect immediately and may even affect already approved projects.
