A representative of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kirill Dmitriev, has met with US officials in Washington, DC, amid international tensions and sanctions imposed on Russia. The meeting took place amid ongoing efforts by the Donald Trump administration to reach a peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv on a ceasefire, Reuters reports.
Dmitriev, a former Goldman Sachs banker, is a key figure in Russia’s political environment and has close ties to a number of members of the Trump team. The visit was the first since Russia’s expanded invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
During the meeting, Dmitriev discussed potential areas of cooperation between Russia and the United States, including investment, energy in the Arctic, and rare earths. At the same time, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the slow progress in the ceasefire talks, saying that he could increase sanctions on Russia, including on the purchase of Russian oil.
This visit underscores the importance of diplomacy in a difficult period and shows that even under sanctions, Moscow continues to seek new opportunities for cooperation with the United States.
