Rescuers have already recovered 41 bodies from the Potomac River, where a large-scale plane crash occurred near Washington, DC. It is known that 28 of the dead have been identified, bringing the total number of victims of the tragedy to 67, Sky News reports.
What happened?
The plane crash occurred after a Black Hawk military helicopter collided with an American Airlines passenger plane in the airspace above Washington, DC. There were three servicemen on board the helicopter, two of whom have already been identified:
- Sergeant Ryan Austin O’Hara
- Chief Sergeant Major Andrew Lloyd Eaves
The name of the third soldier is not disclosed at the request of his family.
The investigation is ongoing
Investigators have already recovered the black box from the crashed Black Hawk and are analysing the flight data recorder along with the aircraft’s two flight data recorders. The main version of the tragedy is a possible violation by the military pilot or a mistake by the controllers.
According to experts, a full investigation of such incidents takes 12 to 18 months, so no official conclusions have been drawn so far. This is the largest plane crash in the US in decades.
