The White House administration has criticised the US Court of International Trade panel that blocked import tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump. This was reported by CNN.

White House spokesperson Cush Desai said the decision undermines efforts to overcome the chronic US trade deficit, which he said has caused a “national emergency”.

“The unreciprocal attitude of foreign countries towards the United States has fuelled historic and persistent deficits that have devastated American communities, left our workers behind and weakened the defence industry,” Desai said.

He stressed that the court did not deny these facts, but that its decision, in the administration’s view, was an interference with the executive branch.

“Unelected judges should not decide how to respond to an emergency. President Trump has pledged to put America first, and we will use all the levers of power to protect the country,” the spokesman added.

What preceded the court’s decision?

A panel of judges in New York has blocked key tariffs on imports from China, Mexico and Canada, which were introduced in April under the pretext of combating fentanyl smuggling. The decision also applies to previously imposed duties.

Legal grounds – lack of proper justification in accordance with international trade laws.

Impact on the economy

Following the court’s ruling, oil prices began to rise as the market anticipates changes in supply chains and a potential reduction in geopolitical trade tensions.
