The World Health Organisation has announced an urgent need for $8 million to provide life-saving medical care to victims of the devastating earthquakes in Myanmar. According to the WHO website , the funds are needed to treat the victims, prevent outbreaks of infectious diseases and restore basic healthcare services in the region over the next month.

Two powerful earthquakes that shook the central part of the country destroyed the medical infrastructure, leaving thousands of people without access to vital services.

In response to the crisis, the WHO activated emergency measures, deploying almost three tonnes of emergency medical supplies in 24 hours and coordinating the work of international medical teams.

The organisation calls on the international community for urgent support to avoid a deterioration of the humanitarian situation.
