During a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that the European Union and China should jointly resist US trade pressure and defend economic globalisation and international trade justice.
“There will be no winners in the tariff war. To go against the world is to isolate yourself,” Xi said, commenting on the US policy of trade restrictions.
This is Xi’s first official meeting with the European leader since the escalation of the global trade war initiated by the Donald Trump administration.
Xi Jinping stressed that:
- China and the EU must fulfil their international obligations;
- It is necessary to protect global trade from unilateral actions;
- The economies of the EU and China account for more than a third of global trade.
“We are strong supporters of economic globalisation and free trade,” the Chinese leader concluded.
