In a telephone conversation with European Council President Antonio Costa, Chinese leader Xi Jinping reaffirmed China’s desire for a peaceful, negotiated settlement of Russia’s war against Ukraine. This was reported by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 14 January.

“China has repeatedly emphasised the need to adhere to three principles: not expanding the battlefields, not escalating hostilities, and not inciting fire,” Xi Jinping said.

China and Europe as partners in a multipolar world

The Chinese leader stressed that there are no fundamental geopolitical contradictions or conflicts of interest between China and Europe. He stressed that the two sides are partners seeking to achieve common success.

Xi Jinping also expressed support for European integration and the strategic autonomy of the European Union, calling Europe an important pole in a multipolar world.

“The more complicated the international situation becomes, the more China and Europe should strengthen strategic communication, increase mutual trust and adhere to the position of partnership,” the Chinese leader said.

A call for negotiations

China remains committed to a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine through diplomatic efforts. In this context, Xi Jinping stressed the importance of avoiding an escalation of the war, which could have wider international consequences.

This statement was another confirmation of China’s desire to maintain a balance in its foreign policy relations with Russia, Europe and other global players.
