President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping will pay an official visit to the Russian Federation from 7 to 10 May. The visit will take place against the backdrop of the Kremlin’s growing international isolation and Russia’s ongoing full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

This was reported by the Kremlin’s press service, Reuters reports.

During the visit, the Chinese president will take part in events marking Victory Day on 9 May, including a military parade in Moscow. Along with Xi Jinping, the parade is expected to be attended by the leaders of Brazil, Serbia and the Prime Minister of Slovakia.

He is also scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The parties will discuss the further development of the so-called strategic partnership between Moscow and Beijing, and plan to sign a number of bilateral documents.

This will be Xi’s first visit to Russia since March 2023, when the Chinese leader declared “boundless friendship” between the two countries, despite the Kremlin’s aggressive war against Ukraine.

Analysts see Xi Jinping’s trip as a political signal – a demonstration of support for the Kremlin at a time when the West is tightening sanctions against Russia and Ukraine is receiving additional international military assistance.
