US President Donald Trump’s National Security Adviser Mike Volz used the Signal messenger to discuss with US officials not only plans for strikes against the Houthis in Yemen, but also the war in Ukraine. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal on 30 March, citing two senior officials.
According to the sources, Volz had several sensitive conversations, including about potential military operations and diplomatic approaches to achieving peace between Ukraine and Russia. The publication does not specify whether these discussions included classified information, but emphasises that the dialogues took place outside official channels.
Officials also noted that despite Donald Trump’s vocal public support, Volz’s influence with the president is waning. One of the interlocutors suggested that if the news of Signal’s use had first appeared in a conservative media outlet, such as Breitbart, Volz would likely have lost his position by now.
Context:
The use of encrypted messengers by government officials to discuss national security issues is a sensitive topic for American politics, especially in the context of escalating international conflicts. Against the backdrop of the US active involvement in countering the Houthis in the Red Sea and continued support for Ukraine, any informal channels of communication attract increased attention from security agencies and the media.
This incident could not only call into question Volz’s political loyalty, but also become a reason to review internal discipline in Trump’s inner circle.
