On the night of Monday, 5 May, the Walla website reported on a new statement by the Houthis regarding the escalation of the conflict between Israel and the Gaza Strip. The Iranian-backed Yemeni armed forces threatened to impose a complete air blockade of Israel by attacking Israeli airports, primarily Ben Gurion International Airport.
The spokesman for the Houthi command, Yahya Sari, called on all airlines in the world to immediately cancel flights to Israel “for their own safety”. He also said that the new strikes are a response to the Israeli government’s aggressive actions in the Gaza Strip.
Israel has not yet officially commented on the threat, but security agencies have stepped up control in the airport area.
A representative of Hamas’ military wing, Abu Obeidah, also expressed his support for the Yemeni militants. In his Telegram post, he said:
“Honour and glory to Yemen, which defies the most brutal forces of oppression. Yemen does not surrender or break, but only intensifies its attacks in the heart of the Zionist entity. These attacks bypass the most advanced systems in the world and hit the target with precision.”
Against the backdrop of these statements, videos of joy and celebration on the streets of Houthi-controlled Yemeni cities appeared on social media. One of the movement’s leading figures, Nasr al-Din Amer, wrote in X:
“This is the most beautiful thing we have ever seen in our lives.”
