President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in London, where he was warmly welcomed by British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in Downing Street. The meeting was a logical continuation of a busy week for the Ukrainian leader, who had just left the White House the day before after talks with US President Donald Trump. In the British capital, Zelenskyy received assurances of “full support” from Starmer and thanked him for the UK’s continued solidarity with Ukraine since the beginning of the war, the BBC reports.
“Thank you, Keir, thank you to the UK for being with us from day one. Your support is not just words, it is actions that save lives,” Zelenskyy said in a joint statement with the prime minister. He also announced his audience with King Charles III tomorrow, which underscores the high level of attention to the Ukrainian issue in the British establishment.
Washington context: Trump’s scandalous statements
Zelenskyy’s visit to London comes amid an international outcry caused by his talks in Washington. There, US President Donald Trump did not mince words, accusing the Ukrainian leader of “playing with World War III”. This harsh rhetoric caused a wave of comments around the world. Some believe that Trump is simply trying to put pressure on Kyiv, while others see his words as an echo of isolationist policy.
London as an island of support
In contrast to the tense dialogue in Washington, the UK has once again confirmed its role as one of Ukraine’s most reliable allies. Starmer stressed that his country will continue to provide comprehensive assistance, from military equipment to humanitarian support. “We stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine in these difficult times,” he said.
The meeting with King Charles III scheduled for tomorrow adds to the symbolic significance of this visit. It will be another signal that the UK not only supports Ukraine at the governmental level, but also demonstrates solidarity at the highest state level.
One thing is for sure: this week in international politics has been a real test of nerves – for Zelenskyy and for the world.
