President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has outlined a key condition for a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. He said that Ukraine would be willing to stop hostilities if it received powerful weapons to defend itself against possible future aggressions.

Zelenskyy spoke about this in a long conversation with the famous American podcaster Lex Friedman. “If the ceasefire works, no one is going to use these weapons. But they must remain so that we are prepared for possible challenges. We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past,” the Head of State stressed.

Zelenskyy recorded a more than three-hour interview for Friedman’s podcast, which he called “meaningful and important for understanding the Ukrainian position”. The president spoke about Ukraine’s vision of a just peace, the origins of Russian aggression, and his willingness to work with partners, including Donald Trump, to establish a lasting peace.

“The conversation with Lex Friedman is an opportunity to convey our position to millions of listeners in partner countries. We talked about the strength of the Ukrainian people and the need for joint efforts to ensure security and stability in Europe,” Zelenskyy said on his Telegram channel.

Lex Friedman, an American interviewer known for his conversations with world leaders, has announced a series of interviews with important figures in contemporary politics. In January 2025, he plans to publish an interview with Zelenskyy and a conversation with Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine, which has been fighting a fierce battle against Russian aggression for more than a year, is striving to build a strong defence system that will prevent a repeat of the past. Zelenskyy stressed that the support of partners remains critical to achieving a just peace.
