Russia launches massive drone attack on Kyiv, air defenses down 20 UAVs

Russia launched a massive drone attack on Kyiv overnight from Sunday to Monday, marking the eighth such assault in September. Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted and downed approximately 20 drones heading towards the capital, according to Kyiv’s military administration chief, Serhii Popko.

“Attack drones launched by the Russians were flying toward Kyiv from various directions and in different groups,” Popko stated in a Telegram post. “Preliminary reports suggest there were no casualties or damage in Kyiv,” he added in his late-night message.

The air raid alert over Kyiv lasted for about four hours, and the full extent of the attack will be known later on Monday, Popko said.

Reuters reported that witnesses heard a series of loud explosions, likely the result of air defense systems engaging the drones.

Ukraine’s Air Force announced earlier this morning that they had shot down 53 out of 56 Shahed drones launched by Russian forces across Ukrainian territory during the night, with most targeting Kyiv. This was confirmed by Ukrainian TV channel Kanal 24 Ukraine.

Moscow has not yet commented on the latest attack on the Ukrainian capital. Russia claims that its airstrikes are aimed only at infrastructure it deems essential for Ukraine’s war efforts.
