Ukrainian ambassador urges Germany to maintain strong support for Kyiv

Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev

Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, has called on the German government to remain steadfast in its support for Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of this commitment for European security. In an interview with the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, Makeiev highlighted that Europe’s stability largely depends on Germany’s ability and political will to continue playing a leading role in backing Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian aggression.

These remarks come amid reports that Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government plans to significantly reduce military aid to Ukraine in its 2025 budget. According to Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, the assistance could be cut from the current €8 billion to €4 billion. The German government is reportedly considering compensating for this shortfall by utilizing frozen Russian assets.

Makeiev expressed hope that the German parliament will take a clear stance on funding security needs in the 2025 budget and urged officials to find ways to ensure sustained support for Ukraine.

This development raises concerns, as Germany remains one of Ukraine’s key allies in providing military assistance, second only to the United States. Continued support from Berlin is crucial for Ukraine’s efforts to restore its territorial integrity and maintain security across the continent.
