Introduction to the debate

Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday confirmed her participation in a CNN-hosted debate with former President Donald Trump scheduled for October 23. This event will be another stage of the intense election campaign.

Harris campaign reaction

According to CNN, “Vice President Harris is ready for another opportunity to share the stage with Donald Trump,” campaign chairwoman Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a statement. Harris emphasized that she hopes for Trump’s participation in the debate, noting that “the possibility should not cause him any problems.”

Tweet by Harris

In a tweet on Saturday, Harris expressed excitement about the possibility of another presidential debate and hoped Trump would join her on Oct. 23. The debate will be a follow-up to the first presidential debate of 2024, which will take place between Trump and President Joe Biden at CNN’s studios in Atlanta.

Trump’s comments

Trump hinted last week that he might participate in a third presidential debate, but his words have been controversial. “Maybe if I got in the right frame of mind,” he noted, referring to his participation in an ABC-hosted debate with Harris in Philadelphia.

Denial by the Harris campaign

The Harris campaign denied Trump’s claim that there would be no new debate. One senior adviser said the former president “changes his position every day.” Harris, in turn, emphasized the importance of the debate to voters, saying, “We owe it to the voters.”

Debate format

CNN offered a debate format similar to June’s, in which Trump and Harris took questions from moderators for 90 minutes without a live studio audience. The network said “the American people will benefit from a re-debate between the two candidates for President of the United States” and looks forward to hearing from both campaigns.

The importance of debate

The debate between Trump and Biden, which took place on June 27, became a significant moment in the campaign, after which Biden, considering his speech to be a failure, withdrew from the race and endorsed Harris as the candidate of the Democratic Party.
