On Wednesday, North Korea showcased its latest military advancements by testing tactical ballistic missiles with exceptionally large warheads and modified cruise missiles. The country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, stressed the importance of strengthening both conventional and nuclear weapons capabilities in response to growing threats from foreign forces, according to Reuters, citing North Korean state media.

A New Era for North Korean Missiles

These missile tests come amid escalating tensions in the region and a series of frequent missile launches. Last week, South Korea reported multiple short-range ballistic missile launches from the North, marking this as the second test within a week.

According to KCNA, the latest test featured new tactical ballistic missiles designated as Hwasongpho-11-Da-4.5, equipped with a conventional warhead weighing 4.5 tons. This signals North Korea’s growing missile capabilities and readiness to strike potential targets with precision.

Regional Stability at Risk

South Korean military officials confirmed that two of the ballistic missiles launched by North Korea landed in mountainous terrain in the country’s northeast under the direct supervision of Kim Jong Un. This is one of the rare occasions when North Korea conducted missile tests aimed at hitting domestic targets, which experts believe could indicate a shift in Pyongyang’s strategy to refine its tactical prowess.

International Relations Implications

Experts suggest that Russia, which continues its military operations in Ukraine, may be interested in acquiring such missiles if their performance is validated through further testing. Despite international speculation, both Moscow and Pyongyang have denied any illegal arms trade or transactions.

Modernizing Military Arsenal

In addition to the ballistic missile tests, North Korea also conducted trials of a strategic cruise missile that has been upgraded for combat use. This reflects Kim Jong Un’s determination to bolster the country’s defense capabilities amid growing international isolation and sanctions.
