According to radio.cz, after the floodwaters receded from the streets of Opava, the devastation caused by the disaster became visible. The city’s mayor, Tomáš Navrátil, estimated the damage at billions of Czech crowns. He shared on Opava’s Facebook page that the sports hall, football stadium, city park, and historic swimming pool were destroyed. Hundreds of people lost their homes.

Opava was one of the most affected cities in the Moravian-Silesian region. The residential district of Kateřinky, home to 12,000 people, was flooded. On one street, the water level rose above 2.5 meters. “We toured the entire city. We inspected the city park. I expected it to be bad. But what we saw was a tragedy. A disaster,” Tomáš Navrátil wrote.

According to the mayor, dozens or even hundreds of people lost their homes. “I feel terribly sorry for these people. They spent thirty years building these homes, proud of them. And within a few hours, they lost everything. I spoke with one resident who hadn’t slept for days. All he said was that a dam should have been built long ago,” Opava’s mayor added.
